Historic Gedling fountain restored to its former glory

Gedling’s much‑loved fountain has been given a new lease of life after a meticulous restoration project funded by the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund.

The decorative drinking fountain, dating back to 1874, stands proudly opposite the war memorial in Gedling Village. Once supplied by water from the Ouse Dyke, the fountain was relocated in 1974 and has remained a cherished local landmark ever since.

Thanks to £8,150 in funding, specialist stonemasons carried out essential repairs—re‑pointing masonry, replacing damaged roof tiles and timber, and restoring intricate stonework. Every step was taken with care to protect the fountain’s historic character, including gentle cleaning to avoid damaging fragile stone details.

Councillor Lynda Pearson, Portfolio Holder for Communities and Place, said: “We are delighted to see the restoration completed. This project preserves a valued local landmark while respecting its historic character.”

Pearson also praised the Gedling Village Local History and Preservation Society and Councillor Jenny Hollingsworth for their dedication to the project.

Kids ride free on buses in Gedling borough this August thanks to Great British Summer Savings scheme

Families across Gedling borough are set for a smoother—and cheaper—summer holiday as Nottingham City Transport (NCT) joins the UK Government’s Great British Summer Savings scheme.

From August 1 to 31, children aged 5 to 15 inclusive can travel free of charge on all NCT bus routes, making it easier for families to enjoy local attractions like Gedling Country Park.

The initiative, funded by the Government, aims to help families make the most of the summer break with reduced travel costs and lower VAT on tickets for museums, soft play centres, and other attractions.

To take advantage, passengers simply need to ask for an “August Child Free Single” ticket when boarding. Children under 11 must travel with an adult, and drivers may request proof of age to ensure fair use of the scheme.

NCT Managing Director David Astill said, “We’re delighted to offer free travel to children during the summer holidays. It’s a great way for families to explore Nottingham’s attractions without worrying about transport costs.”

Councillor Patience Ifediora, Executive Member for Regional Development, Growth and Transport, added, “This is a fantastic opportunity for local kids and visitors to enjoy our city and have a memorable summer.”
