Police bike team carry out patrols in Newstead as part of crackdown on nuisance off-road riders

Police have been cracking down on nuisance off‑road bikers after a weekend of targeted patrols across Newstead Village and Newstead Country Park.
Gedling North neighbourhood officers seized several off‑road bikes under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act, after spotting them being ridden illegally. Traffic Offence Reports were also handed out where offences were found.
Police say they know how much frustration illegal off‑road biking causes for residents, and have promised that these proactive operations will continue as part of wider efforts to tackle anti‑social behaviour and keep public spaces safe.
Anyone with information about illegal off‑road bike use is urged to contact police on 101, report online, or call 999 if a crime is happening right now.

Councillor calls for bus review in Burton Joyce
A Councillor has called for a review of Burton Joyce bus routes to tackle congestion problems.
Carlton East county councillor Mike Adams raised concerns at Nottinghamshire County Council's Full Council meeting over the impact that several bus services are having on congestion and road safety in Burton Joyce.
Speaking on behalf of local residents, Cllr Adams highlighted ongoing issues affecting the 26 bus service, which currently travel through parts of the village where narrow road layouts create significant challenges for larger vehicles.
Cllr Adams explained that Burton Joyce contains two pinch points where the road effectively becomes a single-track route. He said these restrictions force vehicles into the path of oncoming traffic and create major congestion problems for residents and road users.
During the meeting, Cllr Adams referred to a recent incident involving a bus and road workers which resulted in a stand-off and required intervention from Nottingham City Transport to reverse the bus out of the area.
He warned that simply introducing double yellow lines would not solve the underlying problem and would instead risk causing frustration among local residents without addressing the root cause of the congestion.
Calling for a collaborative approach to finding a solution, Cllr Adams said: "We need to bring the pieces of the puzzle together in one room… we need to get it done and we need to get it done soon."
Cllr Adams called for a full consultation involving local councillors, the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA), bus operators and residents to explore alternative routing options.
He argued that moving the affected bus services onto the A612 would remove the need for buses to navigate the narrow pinch points and could help ease congestion while maintaining public transport provision for the village.
Cllr Adams said residents had repeatedly raised concerns about the difficulties caused by large vehicles using these constrained sections of road and that a long-term solution was needed.
He called on the relevant authorities to work together with the local community to identify the most practical way forward, ensuring that public transport services remain effective while reducing disruption for residents and improving traffic flow through Burton Joyce.
Linby school gets breakfast club boost
Families in Linby are set to save hundreds of pounds a year as it prepares to join Labour’s new free breakfast club scheme — a move expected to put around £450 back in parents’ pockets per child.
The Government says its nationwide rollout has already delivered more than ten million free breakfasts to children, with thousands more due to benefit when the next phase launches in September 2026.
Linby Cum Papplewick CofE Primary is the latest school to be signed up to the scheme.
From next September, the school will have to run a free breakfast club offering at least 30 minutes of childcare. To help make it happen, the Government is opening up retailer partnerships with names like Weetabix, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s — and boosting funding dramatically. A school with 50% uptake will receive nearly £30,000 a year, compared with roughly £1,600 under the current scheme.
Sherwood Forest MP Michelle Welsh said the move is about giving every child “the best start in life”, adding that more than half a million children nationwide will benefit.
She said the focus on less affluent areas will help “break down the barriers to opportunity”, with a proper breakfast leading to calmer classrooms, better behaviour and happier pupils.
Welsh added that families will feel the “tangible benefit” of the savings, saying: “Supporting families, one breakfast bowl at a time.”
