Pair on stolen motorbike threw cans and bike helmet at police during chase around Arnold

A pair of knife carriers on a stolen motorcycle hurled drink cans and a bike helmet at police during a high-speed chase through the streets of Arnold.

Officers were on patrol in the town when they spotted the pair riding a bike which did not have a registration plate.

The rider was later identified as Lee Upton and the pillion passenger as Connor Kennedy.

As the bike passed the police car an item was thrown and struck the windscreen.

Officers from the Operational Support team began pursuing the motorbike after it then failed to stop around 7.45pm on February 24th.

The bike was ridden dangerously and at speed along residential streets through Arnold.

Further items, including a helmet and drink cans, were also flung from the bike before officers made tactical contact with the bike at low speed in a car park.

Upton, aged 20, tried to run away but was quickly taken to the ground by officers and arrested.

Twenty-four-year-old Kennedy was detained close to the bike, which investigations then revealed had been stolen three days earlier.

A crowbar was discovered underneath a car close by and both men were found to be carrying knives when they were searched.

Upton, of Rathmines Close, Lenton pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle dangerously, failing to stop, handling stolen goods, possession of a knife in a public place and driving without a licence or insurance.

At Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Friday (24) he was jailed for 40 weeks suspended for two years.

The same court previously sentenced Kennedy, also of  Rathmines Close, to six months in jail on February 26th.

He had pleaded guilty to possession of a knife in a public place.

Police Constable Amelia Robertson, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“This pair’s decision to speed away from police was extremely reckless and dangerous.

“This was then compounded when items were thrown from the bike towards pursuing officers.

“The police teams involved showed skill and professionalism to bring the pursuit to a safe conclusion, arrest these two men and seize not only a stolen motorbike but also two knives.”
