🪧 Pothole protest 'not political', campaigners say

A campaign group in Gedling borough have refuted claims their recent protest held at County Hall was organised by local councillors and intended to be 'political.

Members of the Gedling Borough Potholes Group carried out a demonstration outside Nottinghamshire County Council's HQ last week and then handed over a petition raising urgent concerns about the condition of roads in the area to leaders.

But they say it has been widely noted in the media that several Conservative councillors arrived at the same time as the demonstration and their presence has led to some members of the public believing the event was organised or co-ordinated by those councillors.

"This is not the case," a spokesman from the group told Gedling Eye.

"The protest was arranged solely by the Gedling Borough Potholes Group, and the date and time had been publicly shared in advance.

"We are disappointed that the arrival of political representatives — who were aware of our plans — shifted the optics of the event and created the impression that it was politically driven or orchestrated by them.

"Our group is community-led, non‑partisan, and focused entirely on road safety and accountability. Our purpose last week, and always, is to ensure that the voices of local residents are heard and that meaningful action is taken to repair and maintain our roads."

The spokesman added: "We remain committed to working constructively with Nottinghamshire County Council and all elected representatives who genuinely wish to address this issue."

🛍️ New charity shop opens doors in Arnold town centre

The Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance (LNAA) has opened a new charity shop in Arnold town centre.

Located at 86–88 Front Street, the store is LNAA’s second shop in Nottinghamshire and joins the popular branch in Mansfield Woodhouse.

Inside, shoppers will find a fantastic mix of high‑quality, pre‑loved items including clothing, electrical goods, books, children’s toys and essentials, and a wide range of stylish homewares. Every purchase helps fund LNAA’s life‑saving missions, keeping its helicopter and critical care team ready to respond when every second counts.

LNAA receives no government funding, making its retail income a vital part of sustaining frontline operations. By donating, shopping, or volunteering, the local community plays a direct role in helping the charity continue to deliver critical care across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.

The Arnold shop is actively welcoming new volunteers to join its friendly team. Details are available on the LNAA website: www.ambucopter.org.uk or pop into the shop for more information.

The shop is open for donations of good‑quality, saleable goods. Donors can use the convenient rear drop‑off point accessible via Blatherwick Car Park on Ravenswood Road.

The new store will be open Monday–Saturday: 9:30am–4:30pm

🏚️ Empty homes being brought back into use by council

Gedling Borough Council is recognising National Empty Homes Week 2026 by showcasing work now underway to reduce long-term empty properties across the borough.

National Empty Homes Week runs from March 9-15. Through a dedicated Empty Homes Officer and targeted intervention, the council are continuing to return vacant homes to use and support local housing needs.

A home returned to use by Gedling Borough Council

There are around 1205 empty homes in the borough. Some of the reasons why properties may remain include probate or legal delays, emotional or sentimental attachment and financial barriers to refurbishment

The council works closely with owners to help bring empty homes back into use by offering a Property Matchmaker Scheme, connecting owners with investors interested in purchasing or refurbishing empty homes. In 2024/2025, 62 empty properties were brought back into use, with some of these having been vacated for more than 20 years.

Most empty homes require only minor works to bring them back to use and retrofitting has a lower carbon impact than building new homes.

Councillor Jenny Hollingsworth, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Growth and Economy, said: â€śOur dedicated team continues to deliver meaningful results, bringing properties back into use and supporting our wider ambition to ensure all residents have access to safe, secure and sustainable housing.

🏉 RUGBY MATCH REPORT: Newark 40 - 32 Paviors RFC

This weekend Pavs made the short trip over to Kelham Road to take on Newark RUFC in round 19 of the Midlands Regional 2 North Competition.

Pavs took the points in the home fixture, so Newark would be looking for a little revenge on their home patch.

From the kick-off, Pavs were able to regain the ball and move it through the hands for centre Dan Stokes to outpace the defence and score. It was now 0-5 on two minutes, which ironically is not always a great thing, and this is how the next seventeen minutes turned out.

As Pavs kind of relaxed, Newark ran in three tries to take an emphatic looking 21-5 lead. Pavs regained an element of composure as Stokes went in for his second try with twenty-two minutes on the clock to narrow the lead to 21-12. As this point, returning student Danny Green had to leave the pitch to make repairs to a head wound to be replaced by another Pavs youngster in the guise of Jack Stanford.

As the half drew to a close, Newark went further ahead at 26-12 via another try, before fly half George Billam added a long-range penalty to take the score to 26-15 at the break.

During the break, Green returned in the stead of Ed Marshall.

Minutes into the half, another Pavs defensive lapse saw Newark extend their lead to 31-15, before adding two penalties to go 37-15 ahead on fifty minutes.

A returning Josh Flanagan then replaced Richard Hutchinson as Pavs brought fresh legs into the pack. At this point, they began to rediscover the form that had seen them take four wins out of the last five games. With fifty-eight minutes on the clock the irrepressible Jack Stanford touched down to bring the score to 37-20.

Seven minutes later and following a series of plays, number eight Phil Eggleshaw battled over and with George Billam brought Pavs in touch at 37-27.

Moments later, scrum half Jonty Green slid the ball through for brother Danny to chase and touch down, only to be judged in touch by the touch judge, a very tight decision that turned out to be crucial. Green then left the arena to be replaced by Jack Stanford at nine and Ed Marshall returning on the wing.

A further eight minutes, saw the ever-popular Stevie Allen bustle across the line, again after a series of well-controlled plays to bring matters very close at 37-32. Unfortunately, Pavs conceded a penalty almost in front of the posts to allow Newark to ease any concerns they may have had and take the score to 40-32 with two minutes to go.

Pavs kept battling away, but it was just not to be.

Overall, it was of those cliched days of rugby being the real winner. A hugely entertaining game provided fine fare for the supporters of both persuasions. Next weekend Pavs travel to Ilkeston RFC.
