🪵 Have say about future rules on solid fuel burning and smoke emissions

The Government has launched a consultation on new rules for wood burning in homes.

The outcome will shape how stoves are regulated, how much pollution they are allowed to emit, what information consumers see, and how the rules are enforced.

The consultation is open until March 19, 2026.

What the consultation covers...

The Government is seeking views on:

  • Stronger emission standards for stoves
  • Tougher fines and enforcement for non-compliance
  • Clearer health warning labels on stoves and solid fuels

Impact on Urban Health comment

Ben Pearce at Impact on Urban Health, said: “Wood burning is often seen as harmless or cosy, but the evidence tells a different story. It is a major source of fine particulate pollution that contributes to thousands of deaths every year.

“While air pollution affects us all, it disproportionately affects children, older people, people from lower income areas, and people from racialised communities.

“This consultation is a real opportunity to reduce unnecessary pollution and protect people’s health.”
